What is SYOSA means?

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the meaning of “所作”（syosa). It is a Japanese phrase discribing the demeanor of a considerate behavior. I discovered that 所作 also represents a deeper thought, beyond a clear definition from dictionaries. During my research on this topic, I have realized that the essence of 所作 might be very close to the soul of Zen. 所作 also expresses the idea of unity between the body and the mind. The two are inseperable. The way one reacts is a reflection from his or her own soul. While holding a glass of water next to a table, try to think about when and how to put the glass to the table without any other thoughts. Concentrating on the infinitesimal pieces of an action would allow easier recognition in the subtle changes surround our soul.

五つの実験を通し、所作の意味を考察

「所作」とはなんでしょうか。一般的には「思いやりや他人への配慮、おもてなし」等と解釈されますが、実際にこの言葉が遣われているシチュエーションを深く考えてみると、それら以上の精神性が含まれているように感じます。そこで「所作」に近い意味を持つキーワードを集め比較し、多くの文献や実際に体験したことを通じ研究を進めました。すると、今まで自分が考えたことのない新しい視点に気づかされ感動しました。「所作」という言葉は日本語独自の表現であり、様々な精神性が含まれています。私はそこに、日常生活との深い繋がりを見出しました。私たちの日常では様々な選択をしなければなりません。例えば、今持っているコップをいつ・どのように置くとか。日常の些細な瞬間に所作を意識することで、大きな気づきを得ることがあります。日常から学びを得る上で、所作の精神は大変有用なものです。本作は、多くの方がまだ気づいていないかもしれない「所作」の意味を視覚化し、その言葉の本質と向き合うきっかけになることを目指しました。その思考のプロセスをさらにインスタレーションとして展開し、体験していただくことを狙いました。ぜひご覧になる皆さんも私と一緒に「所作」の意味を考えてみてください。
